Autumn has arrived with cooler temperatures and it’s recommended that your spare tire be inspected. This inspection verifies tire pressure, identifies visible surface damage, dry rot, or air leaks. A tire pressure gauge is recommended as well so that you can regularly check vehicle tire pressure for optimal operation of all the tires. Tire pressure gauges usually cost between $5.00 – $10.00 dollars; however, more expensive options are available if desired. Note that for SUV’s, pickups, jeeps, and vans the spare tire may be located on the exterior or undercarriage of these vehicles. That means the spare is exposed to many foreign elements and temperatures. Ensure the mechanism that lowers or raises the spare into position works properly, because it may be rusted. If the mechanism is frozen in place due to rust or grime try some WD-40 or break free lubricant to unfreeze it. This makes it easier to operate in case of an unexpected tire change. Finally, you should check your tire pressure weekly and follow the vehicles owners’ manual on tire maintenance. Customers often want to know the importance and need of an alignment. The terms wheel alignment and alignment refer to in the same thing in the automotive world. Alignment consists of adjustments made on several suspension components in order to straighten out vehicle wheels. These configurations can only be performed after the measurement of complex angles done via a special alignment machine. Vehicles are unaligned if the steering and suspension are no longer functioning at factory designed angles. Accelerated tire wear is one of the symptoms resulting from this type of problem. Worn ball joints; bushings; tie rods; shocks; springs; etc also lead to the wheel alignments needing adjustments. There are several types of alignments offered in this day and age. They include Front-end, which only aligns the two front wheels and suspension components of a car or truck. Thrust Angle alignment, performed on solid rear axle vehicles and four-wheel alignment usually performed on vehicles with four wheel independent suspensions. Check with your mechanic to verify the type of alignment required for your vehicle. Remember to do an alignment every time you replace the tires on your car or truck. The summer heat can become exhaustive and has a tendency to wear people down fast. This is also true for your vehicle and its electrical system, since it has to work more to keep the car or truck cool. One part that is critical to this system is the vehicle battery, and summer temperatures actually affect the battery more than cooler temperatures. All batteries wear down and eventually have to be replaced. This can happen between 1 and 5 years depending on use, care, and climates. Many batteries require maintenance and need to be refilled with fluid, since it evaporates over time. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, hence breaking down the battery and its life span. To prevent this make sure you have distilled water on hand or battery fluid to refill a battery low on fluid. During the summer months inspect the battery at least twice and perform any required maintenance. Brake disc also known as rotors and are part of the vehicle braking system. If you like working on your own vehicles it would be good to do a little research before completing the task. Rotors are metal disc and come pre-packaged with an oily surface and plastic cover. They are placed in a cardboard box for shipping and sales. Once a buyer receives the product it must be removed from these packing materials and prepped for install. This means cleaning the rotors thoroughly to avoid pre-mature wear and tear. They should be cleaned both inside and out with a break cleaner. However, a less expensive and more thorough way to clean the parts can be done via the use of dish soap like Dawn. This soap is less abrasive and breaks down other contaminates besides the oil better than brake cleaner. Once the rotors are cleaned make sure to rise and dry. Then apply the adhesive protector to both your pads and rotors prior to installation. Also try to keep your hands and tools clean to prevent other contaminants from ruining the surface of the rotors prior to installation.  Here at DitY Auto Repair our friendly staff can assist you on a DIY brake job by explaining these steps and more to improve your vehicles brake life.
